Project 2: 200 word introduction

Jigsaw Puzzle and the Urban carpet. These are the 2 concepts that are conveyed through this model of an office building. The idea of incorporating these ideas into my building having 1 idea being emphasised on the exterior while the other one on the interior. The concept jigsaw puzzle is expressed through the many series of square blocks shown from the exterior of the building. These blocks are grouped up with pairs of iterations which is defined by their different materials. Each iteration has a different purpose with the building; e.g. retail, office, residential spaces. But it is how these pairs of iterations lock to one another thus creating a jigsaw. This creates new spaces and views when connected or separated. As for the urban carpet concept, its focus was on the interior and its placement of its stairs. I tried to place the stairs in a style where it will force an individual to travel in a upwards circular fashion of the building, creating a better experience of discovering the building.

Progress on Model and design

Sketches

Model

For the model of my building, (suggested by my tutor) I decided to make 2 pairs of symmetrical iterations for each level of my office (function) building that would connect like a jigsaw. By doing this, it doesn't overcomplicate the design having symmetrical features to work with. At the same time when designing the structure of my building, I tried to show the concept of urban carpet. I represented this by adding an increased floor level for each iteration of each level of the building.

As for the environment around it (using CryEngine), I decided to go with an urban theme located somewhere along the coast. Suggested by my tutor, I decided to add a small hill behind it where some iterations on some levels would cut inside the hill. While designing the structure, I tried to form it into an almost pyramid-like shape that would allow sunlight for each area of the building (except the ones dug into the hill).

Comparitive Visual Analysis

The concepts I took into account when selecting two more other buildings was the 'Jigsaw Puzzle' and the 'Urban Carpet'. For the 'Jigsaw Puzzle' idea, I examined the interiors of various buildings and decided if there was interlocking of different pathways and spaces present allowing varying functions to be accessible. As for the 'Urban Carpet' idea, I looked for open and reflective spaces for the entrance that invites people into the building. As for the concept model, an idea I had is where I would create an 'Adaptive architecture'. How I would approach this adaptive idea would be a series of different functions (i.e. offices, residential) that constantly moves to adapt to one's needs. This would include blocks connecting to other existing blocks resulting in a different space for the user. While all this is happening, I would have one space (probably the atrium) to remain the same while all the other parts are in motion. This would act as the entry and leaving point of the adaptive functions this concept model would provide.
